Total cost of my "rental run" (otherwise unnecessary rentals): 2 rentals, $24 each + tax. The taxes and fees cost about as much as the 1000 Marriott points are worth, meaning that I basically paid $50 for PC membership. Hope it's worth it...
In this case, the upgrade (and the corresponding buck-a-day) itself wasn't a big deal...I was traveling by myself, and the Monte Carlo was fine for two days. It's just a little bit irritating to see that the systems aren't ready to ensure true "guaranteed" upgrades, when they are advertising this as a stated program benefit.
(For example, in this case, www.hertz.com (http://www.hertz.com) should not have let me book a Standard car, knowing that I was PC and TPA had no Tauri available. The system should have forced me to book mid-size, thus saving the whopping two dollars up front.)
Auh20: Are you a member of Avis PC? What are the features of that program? I'm VERY glad to hear that other car companies are rolling out elite levels. Maybe we'll see some real competition in the customer service area, because this whole industry needs improvement.
